Galle Fort is one of Asia’s best-preserved colonial forts and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its romantic setting is enhanced by its lighthouse, ramparts, and winding cobblestone streets. The National Maritime Museum which houses marine artefacts from shipwreck explorations along the Southern Coast and the island’s oldest breadfruit tree are two of the historical sites within the fort. Ambalangoda, a seaside town in the South, is only an hour’s drive from Galle. Sri Lankan traditional art and subculture scene is teeming with talented individuals. Wander around the Ambalangoda Mask Museum which has served as a representation of authenticity for many years. After that take a leisurely Madu River cruise where you can see small islands and interact with wildlife. The turtle hatchery at Kosgoda Beach which raises sea turtle eggs before releasing them into the ocean is another place to visit in an effort to save endangered species. The best place to relax is the palm-tree-lined cove of Unawatuna Beach where you can spend an afternoon. Weligama has a distinctive fishing tradition of fishing from stilts in shallow waters. This village has a lot of golden sand. See the hollow dagoba of the magnificent Kalutara temple. Events from the Lord Buddha’s numerous previous incarnations are depicted in the murals on the inner walls of this resonant dome.
